Public Speaking & Presentation - 1-Day Workshop

Lesson Plan

Morning Session (9:00 AM - 12:30 PM)
  1. Introduction to Public Speaking (9:00 AM – 9:30 AM)
    • Objective: Familiarize participants with the importance and fundamentals of public speaking.
  • Activities:
    • Brief overview of public speaking history and relevance.
    • Discuss common fears and myths associated with public speaking.
    • Engage participants in a short discussion on their experiences with public speaking.

2.Criteria of a Successful Speech (9:30 AM – 10:00 AM)

    • Objective: Identify the elements that contribute to a successful speech.
  • Activities:
    • Presentation on key criteria: clarity, engagement, structure, and delivery.
    • Group discussion on examples of successful speeches.

 

  1. Preparation of a Purposeful Speech (10:00 AM – 10:45 AM)
    • Objective: Teach participants how to plan and structure a speech with clear general and

specific purposes.

  • Activities:
    • Introduction to speech purposes (informative, persuasive, entertaining).
    • Exercise: Define the purpose of a speech topic provided.
    • Walkthrough of constructing a speech outline (introduction, body, conclusion).
Break (10:45 AM - 11:00 AM)
  1. Writing a Purposeful Speech (11:00 AM – 11:45 AM)
    • Objective: Guide participants in drafting their speeches.
  • Activities:
    • Writing workshop: Participants create a speech draft using provided templates.
    •  Pair activity: Exchange drafts for peer review and feedback.

 

  1. Practice of Giving a Purposeful Speech (11:45 AM – 12:30 PM)
    • Objective: Allow participants to practice delivering their speeches.
  • Activities:
    • Participants practice their speeches in small groups.
    • Instructor provides constructive feedback on content and delivery.
Lunch Break (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM) Afternoon Session (1:30 PM - 5:00 PM)

6.Understanding Vocal Variety (1:30 PM – 2:00 PM)

    • Objective: Enhance speech delivery through effective use of vocal variety.
  • Activities:
    • Presentation on elements of vocal variety: tone, pitch, pace, and volume.
    • Vocal exercises to practice modulation and emphasis.

7.Understanding Body Language (2:00 PM – 2:30 PM)

    • Objective: Improve speech delivery through appropriate body language.
  • Activities:
    • Discuss the role of gestures, facial expressions, and posture.
    • Mirror exercise: Practice using body language to reinforce speech content.

8.Presenting a Purposeful Speech (2:30 PM – 3:15 PM)

    • Objective: Combine vocal variety and body language in speech delivery.
  • Activities:
    • Participants deliver their prepared speeches incorporating learned techniques.
    • Peer feedback session focusing on vocal variety and body language.
Break (3:15 PM - 3:30 PM)

9.Understanding the Power of Language (3:30 PM – 4:00 PM)

    • Objective: Explore how language can influence and persuade an audience.
  • Activities:
    • Discuss the use of rhetorical devices and persuasive language.
    • Analysis of famous speeches to identify effective language use.

 

10.Constructing and Practicing Impromptu Speeches (4:00 PM – 4:45 PM)

    • Objective: Build confidence in delivering impromptu speeches.
  • Activities:
    • Introduction to impromptu speech structure: opening, key points, conclusion.
    • Impromptu speaking drills with random topics.
    • Group feedback on impromptu performances.

 

11.Feedback and Evaluation (4:45 PM – 5:00 PM)

  • Objective: Provide participants with constructive feedback and outline next steps for

improvement.

  • Activities:
    • Instructor-led feedback session covering the day’s activities.
    • Q&A session for participants to discuss challenges and insights.
    • Distribution of a feedback form for participants to complete.
